After two marriages, one divorce, two careers, three children and seven grandchildren, I can report that these fifty years since I have seen you all have been very fruitful, painful, joyful and most often wonderful. I now live in Ellicott City, Maryland, situated between Baltimore and Washington D.C. I recently retired from a thirty year career in private practice as a Psychotherapist offering individual and marriage counseling, group therapy, and workshops. My first career was as a public school music teacher and also as a piano teacher. My husband of thirty years ( John ) and I are very active in our community church, where I play piano for the Sunday services. John is a retired Episcopal Priest and Pastoral Counselor. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at our reunion.

2904 Country Place Court . Carrollton, TX. 75006

It’s hard to believe that 50 years have gone by in what seems like 50 minutes! So, here’s the update. Marketing degree from the University of Illinois, and then an MBA from DePaul’s evening executive program. Started my business career in consumer advertising while in Chicago. My wife Marilyn and I then moved to Carrollton, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, in 1981 (but I’m still a Chicagoan at heart, crying over the Cubs and Bears), and I made an industry change to the marketing of pharmaceutical products, traveling nationwide. Away from work became an avid runner, having competed in 3 marathons and numerous 10K races. Retired from the business world in 2004, and am currently continuing my running/exercise program, albeit at a slower pace, and trying to figure out golf, a simple looking game that brings grown men and women to tears! Also looking forward to traveling. By the way, Marilyn is a very accomplished Realtor, so if anyone is contemplating a move to Texas, let us know. I’m really excited about the reunion and celebrating this special occasion with so many of my South Shore classmates. And a big thanks to my old buddies, Stan “Jake” Jacobson and Ron “Moe” Rubenstein, for commiserating with me when our Cubbies blew their once-in-a- century chance to reach the World Series. Sadly, the curse of the Billy Goat lives on!

Comments: Having just filled in the guestbook, I carelessly omitted my plea to locate Georgia Papayanis, Sara Moore, Janet Lawton!  I would just love to go over the ole' times with them, please, somebody, anybody, give me some help.
Also the good old gang from O'Keefe School, that we all had invaded the South Shore halls for those four years!

Hi All-
Can you believe its 50 years!!!I can't it doesn't seem possible.
Life has been good to us-we haveour good health-we raised 3 wonderful children and now enjoy 8 grandchildren (5-13 years). We are married 49 years this month. Shelly is still practicing gastroenterology 3 days a week - no talk of retiring!
The kids keep us busy since they all live closeby.
We are active boaters - its a big part of our lives - we've been to every port between Puerto Vallarta and Vancouver Island, B.C. on our boat " Scotsman".
So sorry to miss the reunion - we are having our # 2 Bat Mitvah this year with # 3 in October!
 Regards to everyon! and enjoy!
P.S. I would love to hear from you.

Since retirement from a teaching career four years ago. I have been exploring other interests. I've joined a group called South Sideers for Peace. We were opposed to the war in Iraq before it began, and we continue to be opposed to this war. Our group plans and produces public forums, and we hold weekly meetings where we try to solve some of the world's problems. A recent exhilarating experience was to march in the Evergreen Park Fourth of July Parade. We were the 89th of 92 groups. We had our own three piece band a loud speaker. About 30 in our group marched, and we had two cyclists circling our merry band as we walked down 95th street in the OakLawn /Evergreen Park area. I had never been involved in politics before joining this group about 2 years ago. Also, I' ve become involved in several activities and services at the Unitarian Church in Beverly. The Peace group meets there as does a social action committee with which I work. Over the last 20 years, I've handled a variety of free lance writing assignments. Recently I developed an education grant proposal for an environmental group. I hope to do more free lance writing in the future. Another interest of mine is spiritual reading. For the past couple of years, I've been reading these kinds of books; I'm in the process of starting a book discussion group on spiritual reading. It was good looking through all the pictures from '55 and those sent in for 2005. I may not attend the reunion, but I would be happy to hear from any of you, if you are so inclined. I wish you all the best.

Greetings from Los Angeles. I'll be seeing you in a few weeks for a wonderful occasion: our 50th reunion. Although I moved from South Shore after our freshman year, I have maintained many contacts with our old neighborhood and its people all these years. Hardly a week goes by that I am not in contact with someone from the south side. In the last few days one of my Temple members (I am a Reform Rabbi) had an uncle who died, Jack Brandwein. As a teenager he would hang out at Price Drug Store in Hyde Park. My cousin Larry Fisher had been married to Sharon Price. Two days ago I was kibbitzing with Jerry Lowenstein, older than us, who lived near 71st. St, and Gary Barton, younger than us, who lived on 89th and Luella and graduated Bowen. I have met three people who were in Mt. Sinai Hospital with me, the third week of March, 1938. All went to South Shore. One of them is my Urologist, Leon Bender. Last year when I saw Leon I told him that he must have been absent that day in Kindergarten when Mrs. Schmidl said 'you be careful when you put your finger.' I called him on March 17th to wish him a happy birthday and learned that the Winter 56 class was having an early reunion. In the last ten years I have become somewhat of an expert in finding lost classmates. I helped his class find twenty nine of thirty seven from their list. I have been very active on my reunion committee from Hamilton High School in Los Angeles for our last three reunions. Ten years ago I learned that one of the committee members, Kay Klein Gordon had lived on 77th and Phillips, and left Chicago at age seven. She only remembered one person from South Shore, Judy. I helped her get back together with Judy Becker who she hadn't seen in nearly sixty years. Also I have been in touch with Harriet Weinberg Guggenheim, Beverly Greenberg Victer, and Gloria Chapman Getzug.
I attended U.C.L.A, lived in Israel one year and was ordained at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. For two years I was an assistant Rabbi in St. Louis, then returned to California where I have served several Congregations as well as having been an Auxiliary Chaplain at the Marine Base Camp Pendelton during the height of our involvement in Viet Nam, and a prison Chaplain for one year.
My first ex-wife is Israeli. My second ex-wife Muriel (Micki) Ginsburg Schulman Fisher Schulman went to Marshall High on the west side, and was married to Ken Schulman, Sandy Shulman's cousin. I met Micki at a singles' dance after nearly an hour long conversation with Mari Klawans (I deeply miss her; our parents were close friends when we were in diapers) who insisted that if I go to this dance I would have a good time, meet someone and fall in love, which I did. Later Micki and I would realize that she had been my date in August of 1954 (two years after I moved to CA) when I spent the summer with my cousin Larry and we triple dated with three girls from the west side, one of whom was a friend of Ed Silverman, went to Riverview and Unos for pizza. Micki and I had so much in common it was a match made in heaven. However, here on earth it was much, much too difficult.
Here in Los Angeles I have met four other people who were born in Chicago on my exact birthday, 3/20/38, three in Michael Reece, one in Cook County. One of the four, Sandy Shalin Horwitz, belongs to my Temple, and was Mari Klawans' close friend at Senn High.
I hope to write a book of my small world stories. The title will be "It Can't All Be Coincidence." I have many dozens of additional stories, some very bizarre.
My daughter Dale is 42, and has a son Neal age 12. We are looking forward to his Bar Mitsvah on 2/4/6. My son would have been 40 yesterday 8/17, had he not been a victim of the war on drugs a year and a half ago.
The 40th reunion booklet listed 78 lost classmates. About 30 more moved, died, and became lost in the last ten years. With the help of Ron, Marjie and Phil I have found nearly eighty of them.
Thank you to the whole committee for making this reunion possible. I am sure we will all have a great time.

Fifty years…WOW!!  From the senior class at good old SS…to the good old classy seniors on SS; From the extra thick shakes, bacon double cheeseburgers and fries…to bottled water and “fat-free” everything else; Chuggin’ a quart of pee-warm “Prima” at the overflow…to doing shots of Maalox; When rockin’ ‘round the clock didn’t involve a chair; Slick DAs…to high foreheads and wide parts; Slide rules…to PCs; 78s to MP3s; Howard Miller…to Howard Stern.

(End flashback sequence – Hit fast-forward)

Anyhow, I’m still down here in paradise with my child bride of 46 years.  Our six kids (ages 32 to 45) are all quite successful in their chosen career fields and the 10 grandkids (ages 5 to 25) keep things moving along quite nicely.

I continue to work a 40-hour week with the maintenance department at a 180-unit condominium complex.  My wife works a couple of days a week at the local hospital, as a nutritionist.

We will talk at you again in another 5 or 10 years –if not, I’ll see ya’ in the halls up yonder after our next graduation.

I hope all your major goals have been achieved, your fondest dreams have come true and your wildest fantasies have been realized.  It has been a slice so far.  Y’all be good to each other and I’ll see ya’.

Later,

Bob Frazier

Quick summary of the last 50 years that have raced by: After completing my B.A. and M.A. at the U. of Illinois, my (then brand new) husband, Sam Harris, and I went off to Bonn, Germany, for a year
on his N.S.F. Post-doc fellowship. Then to Columbia University, where I finished my Ph.D. in English while he dabbled in esoteric physics stuff. Then, it was on to Purdue University, where we were both
faculty  (Sam in physics, me in English) and are now happily retired.
Our daughter is the Executive Director of a large synagogue in Evanston, with a neat husband and two incredibly magnificent kids (no bias there!), and our son, the Deputy  Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council, is about to be married (finally!) in D.C., in September, to the woman of his dreams.  Pre-wedding festivities may keep us from the reunion, but I hope not.

Is there any interest in a listserv where we can chat in more detail??

In putting all of our pictures on this site I marvel as to how wonderful we looked than and how much better we look now. I only wish we were all still here as some of the lights from this class have passed on!!! Hope you all can come to celebrate our 50 years after, and what memories we will share. I have been blessed with my wonderful wife of 45 years, Avis. We went to our prom. Our son Art and his wife Robin recently had a son Ross our first grandson. I went to Navy Pier for 3 years and graduated from U of I @ Champaign-Urbana;I received my PhD in Anatomy form Northwestern. I have a great profession, I am a Professor of Anatomy at Tufts University School of Medicine. I wish all my fellow Cub fans to keep the faith because as a long suffering Red Sox fan the wait was worth it!!!.  What about them Pats!!.

With the exception of Dr. Annan, it was not from the faculty at South Shore that I learned the most significant lessons. The keys to life long joys of serious music were given me not by Samuel Gorbach but by a much sterner taskmaster, Warren Quinn. Political science was animated for me not by Grace Frederick, but by John Weicher. I doubt that we’ve ever voted alike, but he sent me scrambling to get all the facts before even thinking of disputing him. On the Shoreline, when I rewrote, it was not to meet Mr. Carroll’s standards, but those of Sue Cohen, the first discerning audience for my words. They mattered to her. From Jim Marine, I learned a gleeful relish of the ironic, the absurd, and the surreal. From Jim Kaveshan, a prince of calm and kindness, and my first real friend at South Shore, I at least began to learn that life was seldom the high drama I was determined to make it. Then there were the pleasures of observing Carol Leaf. Any day on which I could make that exquisite face crumple into laughter was thoroughly redeemed. What I learned then has served me well, and mind you, I’m not complaining, but couldn’t someone have mentioned to me that I was gay? Half the world seems to have been on to that long before I was. Judging from your fifty-year old comments in my Tide, most of you had considerably more confidence in my prospects that I did then. I started at Illinois at Navy Pier, but after my mother, whom I adored, was committed for a time to a mental asylum (today, her condition would be treated simply by medication) , I kept people at bay and dumped myself in the Army where I thought I would either be straightened out, or permitted to self-destruct with anonymity. John Weicher and his mother knew of my plans and did their best to talk sense to me, but I would have none of it. The next thing I knew, I was in the Military Police, in Alaska, dripping with miles of ill-polished leather, guarding a prison stockade. The highlight of my first day on the job was being sent into a tiny cell to straight jacket a suicidal prisoner who was armed with broken glass. Still, there was no KP in the corps. My enlightened commanding officer found great amusement in my paisley shaped attempts to fit into the Army’s square holes. The inmates, most of whom could have broken me in two, had they so chosen, nicknamed me “The Brute.” Captain Pierce in a gesture I will never forget arranged for me to take my college boards and all but ordered me to apply to the University of Chicago. I was accepted and given a scholarship. From there, I took a job as an English teacher, as a temporary measure, but soon found it too rewarding to leave. For someone who had made little sense of his own life, I was surprisingly good at helping my students make sense of theirs. I enjoyed running the school paper, giving that up only when I became department head. I used the freedom that gave me to create courses in film studies and humanities, taking students everywhere on field trips: the theater, the opera, and finally to Italy on Spring breaks. I retired eight years ago. I was not burned out, and I sometimes miss my audience. In 1964, I met a sweet natured guy from Indiana. We lived together for nine years, brought property near Crawfordsville, and built a cabin on Sugar Creek. When we parted, it was amicable, and we remained friends for many years until his death. In 1979, I met another Hoosier, the love of my life, and moved to Munster, Indiana where we remain today. I have no children, of course, but I indulge and surprise my four bright and beautiful young cousins (the youngest two adopted in China) at every opportunity. They will attest that I am a most excellent “uncle.” I work hard at it because I expect some serious sobbing at my funeral. In the interim, I would love to hear from any of you who care to contact me at 219-836-5711 or JOURNEYJOY@aol.com.

I retired a few years ago and now 'work' as a volunteer tour guide for our new Millennium Park, the Lincoln Park Conservatory, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Chicago Greeter program (see below).  I'm also a continuing education student at the University of Chicago, tackling anew - and finally understanding! - some of the authors we groaned through at South Shore.   My husband Dean Storey and I live on the Near North Side in the heart of the Rush Street entertainment district.  I'm very fortunate to have two terrific stepkids and three grandchildren.
If you're coming to town for the reunion, haven't visited for a while, and can spend an extra day here, you might enjoy a Chicago Greeter tour.   They're personalized for each visitor - not group tours-please contact us at least 7 days before you are coming..  You can reserve one, at no charge, at www.chicagogreeter.com.  The Chicago tourism website is also useful:  www.877chicago.com.  Or, as a longtime downtown resident, I'll be glad to give tips on restaurants, entertainment, etc. to anyone who contacts me at bryastor@att.net.

I smile, looking at our graduation pictures, thinking about how little we knew each other, really - and how little we knew ourselves. We were 'works in progress' then, unfinished and full of possibilities, unknowable as the coming years. After the unfolding of half a century, it will be fun to discover who you all have become.
About myself: U of Missouri J-school, BJ. Married in 1958, and once was enough: Barb still puts up with me. Two daughters, one beloved grandson whom I help home-school in history, composition and French. Six years in corporate PR, 3 years in industrial film production, I quit wage-world at age 30 and have been a freelance writer of sponsored film/video/DVDs ever since. Worked in many countries, lived 3 years in a remote Scottish coastal village where I became an adept sheep-shearer and not-so-adept Celtic folk musician. Citizen of Ireland, the USA and the world. I've seen more, done more, and had more fun than I ever imagined possible in my SSHS days - but there's a lot left to be done. Life is good
Comments: Just an odd memory of a member of the reunion committee: I sat behind Jack Marks in Mrs. Sullivan's 5th grade class, and I remember that he had a belt that said "Estes Park" on the back.  Why I stored that in my grey cells for 58
years, I can't imagine.  ;-)

Thank you for putting the website together and gathering our words and pictures, and to the committee for planning the Reunion. Looking forward to it all.
Re pix - I was surprised to find that of the 281 photos I've saved on the computer, two include me. Rather than send photos of Jane, my wife of 36 years, our family, Kim in Germany with her husband and our two granddaughters (17 and 13), Rex in LA starting a new career, and Dawn in Dallas with Scott and the boys (4 and 2), or scenery or animals seen on recent trips to National Parks where we volunteer consult with their educational programs, attached are the two photos.
For the next few years, all being well, I'll teach each Fall at the University of Texas at Austin in my retirement. Essentially after 36 years at UT I'm going half time. I finish my second three year term as President of the International Association of Individual Psychology in May and will then only have my desk to organize. Everything else, about me and you and everyone, we can schmooze about at the Reunion.
 Best,Guy

I went to the University of Illinois in Chicago (Navy Pier) till 1957, then transferred to the U. of Chicago and got an A.B. in 1959. I later got an M.A. from the University of Massachusetts ('62) and a Ph. D. from Fordham in '67. Taught political science at City College of New York for 40 years, retiring a couple of years ago. Married Sylvia Iafolla in 1964, who has put up with me for upwards of 40 years and has given me great joy and three great kids. Compound interest: they have given us five amusing grandchildren. The whole lot  live within an average 20 minutes from our doorstep. What could be better?

Dave & his wife Patti.
My wife and I are looking forward to the BIG reunion in September - we'll be there along with my twin sister , Louise Middlemas Meisterling and her husband Bob . We recently gathered at her house in Thousand Oaks , Ca ( about 100 miles north of us -- we're in Newport Beach Ca )along with Judy becker Forman and her husband , and Dixie Comptron Davis and her husband and had a wonderful time. During the course of that evening Judy took digital pictures of all of us and said she would send them to you -- so assuming that you got them all you need in addition is some narative --my question is how do I do that ?
My computer skills are limited , but I can manage an E - mail --- can I just E -mail you something ?
Thanks for your efforts-- I know things like this take a lot of work !!

50 Years, Oh My!  My brother, Dave, and I have never been to a high school reunion, but we, and our spouses, are looking forward to going to this one!  We all do go to our college sorority and fraternity reunions on a regular basis, and know how much fun and special that is!

I married my college sweetheart, Bob Meisterling, right after I graduated, in 1959, so we have been married for 46 years.  He was a navy officer by then, posted in North Carolina, and we soon started our family….3 sons.  We lived in Wisconsin and Michigan before moving to California in 1967, and we’ve been in our home in Thousand Oaks now for 37 years.

Our oldest son and his family live in the next town, which is wonderful, because they lived in Minnesota for 7 years before coming back.  They have 2 girls, ages 9 and 11, and it is wonderful having them just minutes away now.

Our great loss has been the death of our son, John, when he was 30.  A month later, his son was born, and his daughter turned 2.  Fortunately, his wife is like a daughter to us, and we are very close to them.  They live 2 hours from us, and we see them quite often.  They all are doing great, and we are very proud of them!

Our son, Tom, is single and lives in Thousand Oaks….he is a great help to us.

Bob has been retired for about 6 years now, and loves it.  It is so nice to be free to travel and play together at any time of year.  My interests: my grandchildren, travel, annual trips with special college pals, tennis, golf, walking (no more running!), my home, and am a volunteer literacy tutor in the community.  Also, brother Dave and all his family live less than 2 hours from us, and we all love our times together with them.

Hope to see many of you soon!

thanks to you, Jake, and to your colleagues, for taking on this job for all of us.
Joyce and I aren't yet sure we'll be able to join you, so I thought I'd send you all greetings and propaganda in this form, just in case.
The Charles Bridge / Prague pic (attached) is our most recent.
Just formally retired last month, although Bucknell has given me an office and a budget with promises to keep me exploited, somehow. In the meantime, every day's like Saturday... (i.e., chores). The official propaganda's on the website (URL below).

We've been aggressive world travelers for years, and fully intend to continue moving around as long as we can, from this home base. Lewisburg's just off I-80, a picture-postcard college town and a convenient stop on the way to New York or Washington. Please do....
Hope to see you soon. John!!

Lynn & Chuck.
After attending Wilson Jr. and Roosevelt University, I left Chicago in late 1958 to live with my sister Lois in Los Angeles.  I finished up my classes in pyschology at UCLA while working for United Airlines.  I married Chuck Collings in 1960 and stayed with United until the birth of our daughter Lisa in 1967.  I returned to United for a short time in 1971 and then Chuck and I opened a used and rare bookstore with a hand bookbindery in the back.
We have lived primarily in Los Angeles except for two years in Hawaii during the 60s.  For the last 30 years I have worked for real estate developers, one of them for the last 21 years.  In addition to real estate we have been administering the estate of a contemporary artist who died in 1994 and we operate a publishing company for books and fine art reproduction.

Our daughter Lisa and her husband Mike are PhDs in organizational psychology and have two daughters, Kennedy 4 1/2 years and Riley 17 months.  They live in Denver so we do a great deal of traveling to Colorado.
I am looking forward to our 50th class reunion although I have no idea how it came up so soon!!!

It's hard to believe that almost 50 years have gone by since we graduated.  I still feel young in spite of the fact that I have been married for 47 years, have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. As a member of the Reunion Committee,  I know that a wonderful weekend is being planned.  We hope YOU will join us.   Looking forward to seeing everyone in September.

Robert Penninger
IN MEMORIAM: ROBERT B. PENNINGER -- (Senate - August 01, 2002);   Mrs. BOXER.
Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity to share with the Senate the memory of one of my constituents, Robert Penninger, who lost his life on September 11, 2001. Mr. Penninger was 63 years old when the plane he was on, American Airlines Flight 77, was hijacked by terrorists. As we all know, that plane crashed into the Pentagon, killing everyone on board.
Robert ``Bob'' Penninger grew up in Chicago, IL. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University and received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University.
After graduating from college, he married his wife Janet and they raised their daughter, Karen, in Massachusetts. At the time of his tragic death, Bob was working as an electrical engineer for the defense contractor BAE Systems in Rancho Bernardo, CA, and was returning home from a business trip on September 11.
Mr. Penninger lived life to the fullest and is greatly missed by all who knew him. His wife, Janet, recalls, ``Bob was always willing to help everyone he met. He was a great storyteller and he always had a smile on his face and a cheery hello for all.'' Mr. Penninger enjoyed motorcycle trips with his wife and friends. He also loved taking his 1999 Electric Green Cobra Mustang convertible to car shows, where he won many trophies.
Kit Young lived next door to Penninger for eight years and remarked, ``Bob brought a lot of joy to this neighborhood. He developed a special relationship with my 11-year-old grandson-he took my grandson to a car show in Los Angeles and they were planning another outing. A lot of people wouldn't care anything about an 11-year-old kid, but Bob did.''

None of us is untouched by the terror of September 11, and many Californians were part of each tragic moment of that tragic day. Some were trapped in the World Trade Center towers. Some were at work in the Pentagon. And the fates of some were sealed as they boarded planes bound for San Francisco or Los Angeles.
I offer today this tribute to one of the 51 Californians who perished on that awful morning. I want to assure the family of Robert Penninger, and the families of all the victims, that their fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters will not be forgotten.   Senator Barbara Boxer, CA.

744 OLD TRAIL, HIGHLAND PARK, ILL. 60035

I REALLY lucked out when Ed Dratler chose me to be his wife.  My greatest loss was his death 6 years ago.  Ed was much older than I, so when we married he wanted me to give up my Respiratory Therapy career, because he wanted us to have more time together.  He also retired shortly after our marriage, so we did extensive traveling domestically, but far more abroad.  His curiosity and energy level matched mine, so reading, learning, classes, etc., were part of our lives.  Our common love of people allowed us to enjoy those who entered our life, but most of all, we had a ball together during our almost 25 year marriage.  Financially, I'm fortunate be able to continue to travel and live life to the fullest and do everything as before Ed passed away, but it's not the same doing many of the activities by yourself. I miss sharing the various experiences we participated in, and more importantly the communication we had about what we did individually and together.  Since his passing, I have taken a few trips, and in time I'll be taking more.  In the meantime, blessed with good health, I still spend winters at our Scottsdale home and am still in the same Highland Park home on Old Trail during the summers. I continue to have lots of energy and an endless curiosity, consequently not enough time to pursue all my interests.  So among other things I spend my time volunteering, taking classes in piano and other areas of interest, teaching computer classes at the JCC, playing bridge, involved in our temple, sharing my home with 3 shelties and generally keeping very busy and appreciating everyone and everything in my life.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion and wish the very best next 10 years to be fun-filled and healthy until we see each other, G-d be willing, at the next reunion.

After high school, I went to the U. of I. at  Navy Pier for two years, to Champaign for two years, and then to the U.of I.  Dental School for four years.
I  then served in the Navy for 2 years - including a year in Okinawa with the Third Marine Division.
Butch Gordon, Jack Marks, Dave Ramis and I have remained good friends  since Bradwell. We get together every few months and are all on the Reunion Committee.
Jack and I went to  Bradwell, South Shore, Navy Pier, Champaign, Dental School and into the Navy together. I also  keep in touch with Jim Malkus, Joel Solovy, Sue Feldman, Stan Jacobson, Stew  Agoos, Dick Berkowitz and Joel Siegel.
I was married in 1966, divorced in 1976 and married again in 1980 to my wonderful wife Tari. She teaches music and is particularly interested in the beneficial effect of musical training on the brain. Our daughter, who we adopted
at birth, is 17 and a senior in high school. Jessica is interested in teaching  or psychology. I lived in Hyde Park for 30 years and we moved to Skokie 7 years ago. However, my practice is still in  Hyde Park and I commute 5 days a week.
We have had five reunion meetings at Marjie's house and they have been a  lot of fun.   It is wonderful  to see my classmates at the meetings and I am looking forward to seeing many more  at the reunion.  I hope many will be  able to
attend since we are planning a wonderful weekend.

On the weekend of our 50th Reunion most of us will have attained  the age of 68, how did that happen?
It is a pleasure to be part of the Reunion Committee again. During meetings I marvel at how compatable we are. The only differences in all the years are the topics of conversation.
Since forced retirement five years ago, I have enjoyed pursuing my hobbies and watching my four grandchildren grow up. It is difficult to find a current photo of myself without scuba diving gear or a bike helmet. My hobbies have really taken me all over the world.
I am active with volunteer work at church and the Shedd Aquarium. Remember the Caribbean Reef Tank in the lobby of the Shedd? I've joined the dive team and go into the tank feeding fish and talking to the audience.
I look forward to seeing each and everyone of my classmates in September.

The last 50 years have been full of good experiences and the wonderful opportunities just keep on coming. A reunion of high school and grade school classmates after 50+years is a treat that I don't want to miss. I volunteered to help on the reunion commitee so I could get an early jump on reconnecting with classmates. I hope everyone who we are able to locate will respond with information and plan to attend the September activities if at all possible. I hope to see everyone at the September Reunion festivities.
I am particularly interested in contacting classmates who also attended Horace Mann grade school. Drop me a line sometime. Jerry

It was fun to see all the old faces.  For me it was like ten lifetime ago.  I'll submit something when I get a chance.  My resume is on my website .  http://www.hospitalclown.com/InfoPages/resumenew.htm
.  I lost touch will everyone in Chicago back in the 80s.
By the way my name Shobhana was given to me by the Indian Sadguru Muktananda Paramahansa from Ganeshpuri India.  Shobi Dobi came from that name  Somehow it was easier for people to say Shobhana Schwebke than Alice Schwebke.  Now eeryone just calls me "Shobi" in and out of makeup.
Do you know if the class of 1954 has a website?.
It's feels good to reconnect, thanks for the effort you made on my behalf.

Sandy Shulman Kotler Cochrane Skokie  IL

As you can see another name has been added.  On February 25th, 1999, I married John Cochrane.  I now have in addition to my daughter Andrea, son, Donald, and granddaughter, Kara - six stepchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and four stepgreatgrandchildren.  I always wanted a large family and John has made my wish come true.  John and  I have a 29 foot Class A Recreational Vehicle (RV).  We have traveled all over the country.  This summer we are planning to drive to Alaska.  John has always wanted to drive the Allcan Highway, and this August his wish comes true.  In addition to my traveling,   I do volunteer work at the workshop and home where my special needs son, Donald attends and lives.
I am involved with most of his programs and activities.  He always lets me know when there will be a holiday party.  Out comes my cowgirl outfit for Halloween and the trick-or-treat hand dish with candy and ofcourse the big Christmas party follows that.  I still feel as  I did ten years ago.  Being a survivor after I lost my first husband  and trying  to look at the positives in  LIFE since I see so many problems, both self-made and man-made, I honestly can say that I am looking forward to a bright and happy future with all my love ones.

In Mrs. Stern’s Civics class, she once asked, “What should minimum housing standards be?” and I answered, “Four walls, a roof, and a door.”  I only remember this because Hal Klawans thought it was funny and used to remind me of it, when we were roommates at Michigan and afterwards.  I’ve now spent most of my career as a housing economist, working at HUD during most Republican administrations and at one or another think tank the rest of the time.  I’ve just finished four years as FHA Commissioner, responsible for managing the FHA mortgage insurance programs, helping a million families a year buy their first home, and they all have more than four walls, a roof, and a door – if that was all they had, we couldn’t insure their mortgages.  I was the longest serving Republican FHA Commissioner since we were at South Shore.

After Michigan I came home to the University of Chicago and got a Ph.D. in economics – taught at Ohio State where I met my wife (Alice Landt, also an economist).  About the time we got married I took a year’s leave of absence to come to Washington, and we’ve been here nearly all the time since, including the last 28 years.

We’re late parents – our son Johnny, not yet 28, was ordained as a Presbyterian minister yesterday (August 14) and is starting as a youth minister in Philadelphia, with his fiancée, also a minister; they’re getting married this fall.  He is an avid White Sox fan, to the intense disgust of his mother, who grew up within walking distance of Wrigley Field and graduated from Lake View.  Our daughter Jean is a research assistant specializing in Middle East politics at the Hudson Institute, where I’m also working now, doing research and writing on housing and urban issues, and managing a research program, which is most of what I’ve done in or out of the government.  And I’ve written a good dozen papers about what minimum housing standards should be.

I'm thrilled that the reunion committee found me.  After 8 1/2 years at Bradwell and 1 1/2 at SSHS, our family moved to Highland Park.  I graduated from Highland Park High School in '55, married Ed Weil in '58, and graduated from Northwestern in '59.  We moved to Andover, Massachusetts in '67.  We have 4 children and 8 grandchildren spread out in 4 different states.  I would love to reconnect with my old friends from Bradwell and South Shore.  Do you all remember the Bradwell school song?

In the show stopping words of Stephen Sondheim, one of my favorite Broadway composers, " Im Still Here". I love being retired (six years now), having time to travel (a Danube river cruise recently), living in a high rise on the lake (gave up the hosta garden), and driving a car with a disability sticker (necessary after a quintuple by-pass). As Sonheim says in "Follies":
